Psyllids in Lilly Pillies

What are they?

Psyllid's are small sap sucking insects that resemble a tiny cicada. What do they do? They are most commonly known in our gardens for the damage we see on the leaves of lilly pillies. Both the adult and juvenile stages do the damage by sucking sap from the leaves. This causes the leaves to be covered in little lumps and often some degree of curling.

But I want to grow lilly pillies!

It is not all bad news... Psyllid's are very diet specific, and tend to target only certain species. There are a number of really good lilly pilly varieties that are great in our gardens, and the pysllids just don't go for them. These include "Resilliance" (named for their resistance to psyllids), "Cascade" and "Small Leaf" lilly pilly, as well as a number of larger growing species. Just be sure to check with your nursery if the plant you have picked is resistant to psyllid attack. Plants in a nursery may not show any signs of psyllid attack as they may well be spraying / treating them for them.
